PE Faculty

Intent

Our intent is to develop the holistic child through a broad, diverse and challenging curriculum.  We look to develop physical literacy in all students across all ages & stages.  Through regular participation in physical activity children & young people would be expected to develop character, confidence and resilience, enabling students to make informed choices for lifelong engagement in physical activity.  We very much see physical activity and school sport as the vehicle through which such skills should be nurtured.

As a department we define both procedural and declarative knowledge, ensuring students are able to demonstrate what they know and what they show.  A carefully planned curriculum that allows progression across all key stages enables students to demonstrate competence in all 4 domains of physical literacy and successfully complete the Life Skills Award at the end of year 9.

At KS4 we aim to prepare students for the next stage of their lives through recognising and developing their leadership and tactical understanding through sport. Developing the confidence and competence to manage and lead others in a variety of contexts are explored.

Improving the mental and social health of our students is also  a priority. We want students to appreciate how a lifelong engagement in sport & physical activity can benefit them in the workplace or in on-going further education.

Focusing on developing students' tactical understanding will also be a focus, where students will engage in designing and adapting strategy for a variety of sports.

At examination level we take on board the latest developments in education and technologies to embed the essential knowledge required at each particular key stage to be successful.

We build the cultural capital of our students through whole school events such as inter tutor, local and regional competitions, sports day and annual sports tours. We look into opportunities to watch live international sport and students are taken to varied enrichment opportunities.

Implementation

Our implementation is achieved through exploration of the 4 domains of physical literacy.

Our curriculum is carefully mapped so that all domains are explored across different ages and stages. Through effective curriculum planning and regular reviews of learning, the faculty aims to provide students with both curricular and extracurricular opportunities to develop such domains.

These skills within each domain are explicitly taught in lessons. We use all available resources and teaching strategies to ensure that students have recognised the importance of developing character through a broad and balanced curriculum.

In PE we implement our curriculum through using a variety of teaching strategies and kinaesthetic tasks  to embed both techniques alongside a rich understanding of their importance. These are focussed on embedding challenge, metacognition, memory techniques, numeracy and literacy into our curriculum.

Impact

Numerous variables exist to enable staff to measure the impact of our curriculum. The impact is measured by what we read, what we see and what we hear. Changes in behaviour and attitudes are vital cues in measuring the impact of our intent. Students are expected to be more open in their views, more considerate in their actions and more appreciative of the opportunities that exist for them at our school.

The PE curriculum is a crucial part of the student experience at HCCS. Inside and outside of the classroom we continue to encourage students to be the very best version of themselves, fostering a life-long commitment to physical activity and ensuring they have a broader understanding of their importance in society.
